"The disorganized life is not worth examining."
I forget who spun that variation.

Re: Haidt's quote, what does he mean by "unlived"?

What of Mill's line that it is better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a pig satisfired, and if the pig disagress, that's because he can see only his own point of view. Something like that.

In the context, he was saying that you need to get out there and live, or analysis will not be of any benefit. You have to have meat in your life to chew.

But then, E. E. Cummings said "Kisses are a better fate than wisdom."

I hadn't expected that would be the case with you. As for kisses, I've had some and desire more but they are fleeting pleasures and not so fully galvanizing as writing or reading a great book. (When I say galvanizing I'm thinking of "clicking on all cylinders"--emotional, intellectual, physical--whereas with kissing, it's more a matter of hitting so hard on one cylinder--that's rather crude, I know!--that others are forgotten. In a way it's like drunkeness---you're not really funny or witty or sexy, but you sure do feel that way!

I incline toward the 'contemplation is the mountaintop' view, though I'm most likely to experience 'flow' while reading and writing, or playing or listening to music.

Who was the one that said "better to not have been born"? I like that one.

Zen Master Seung Sahn (who studied Greek philosophy and was an admirer of Plato and Socrates in particular), used to encourage people to stop worrying about making mistakes. "Being born is already a big mistake" - he would say - and then continue, "But having already made that mistake - now what?"
